Sister Smith told us her group of "quad-riders" celebrated their January birthdays and she was a little sad that she wasn't able to be there this year. Elder Smith is not used to remembering her birthday (they have been married less than 2 years), so he said he would need a nudge. We schemed to plan a way to celebrate, and then we had to come up with Plan B.
Gerhard decided to stay home from church meetings on Sunday so he could get over the flu and his bad cough and be ready for Monday at the temple. The Smiths had worked late Saturday night, so the others didn't call them to go to early church meetings, and for awhile it looked like there would be no way to surprise Cheryl.
Brother Smith suggested they could go for a walk on the beautiful Sunday afternoon, which gave me time to use our back door key that opens their front door and put up the banner, the piƱata and some balloons. She was just a little suspicious when he didn't want to go exploring on a bus ride, but wanted to come home more quickly than usual.

Then the fun was rewarded when she saw their apartment decorated. We all went over about 5:00 P.M. and spent an hour visiting and eating birthday cake.
