We learned first hand about a cenote, a deep natural pool. People have told us stories about the many cenotes in this area, and at Dzibilchaltún we saw the Xlacah cenote which anciently was regarded as sacred, but now is famous with swimmers and divers for its clear water and its depth--at least 415 feet.
In the break on Christmas Day, between touring Chichén Itzá and watching the light show, we went to see the X'keken cenote (also known as Dzitnup).

It is located in an impressive subterranean natural formation and the story behind its discovery as told by a young man is also fascinating. A long time ago, a man was hunting in this area and wounded a wild pig which ran away. The trail of blood left by the pig led him to this cenote which for many years was not known by the public.

After we had climbed down a rock staircase, holding to a sturdy rope and at times having to stoop to avoid hitting the rock ceiling, we could see a small natural opening with the light shining through. The roots of trees reach down to the water and bats fly near the ceiling.

Finally the community raised enough money to develop the area, and now admission money pays for its upkeep as well as supporting community projects. We came about half an hour before closing time, and there were children playing on the rocks by the edgewith watchful parents nearby, as well as many people swimming in the cool water.

Leaving the cenote, Severiana offered small crocheted purses. I chose one that looked just right to hold my recommend and keys.
