The lizard in the laundry room
Since coming to Mérida, we have only seen one cockroach, flies are almost completely absent, and ants are no big deal, but we have discovered another unwelcome visitor. The first couple of nights, Gerhard was startled by a noise like someone going around the apartments tapping with metal on the glass doors, then one night we heard a noise like people smooching by our bedroom. Investigation didn't turn up anyone, either time, but as Gerhard talked to workers around the temple, they told him of the "besuquio," the descriptive name for a small lizard that makes smooching noises and gets into houses. One night when the noises were very evident, Gerhard went outside and saw them going up the wall and under the eaves of the apartment. We have even found them in the temple, running around on the walls and the new carpet.
Far from being a good pet, these lizards become a nuisance. They stink up the rooms they live in, which in our book excludes them from the category of "favoritos." I still wear my St. George Marathon t-shirt with the geckos, but I have a different feeling about them now.
