We had a date on Wednesday when we didn't go to the temple. It wasn't an assignment, just time together away from our apartment. Jean Call had told us that she often walked to a park near here and enjoyed seeing the animals while Pres. Carl was busy at the temple, so we tried her idea for our first excursion into historic and scenic places in Yucatán.

El Parque del Centenario was inaugurated 18 September, 1910, as part of the celebration of the centennial of Mexico's independence, when Don Enrique Muñoz Aristegui was governor of Yucatan. On 31January 1963, it was named a National Treasure by the state government. It hosts distinctive animal species from the region and other countries. A great aviary and a small aquarium were built lately. Families can take a short train ride along the periphery of the park, refresh themselves next to an artificial lake, rent a horse for their children, hire the services of the official photographer for a memory photo, picnic under the trees, even hang a hammock between the trees for a siesta.
